Official Quahog predicts 11 ½ weeks of beach weather ahead!
Cape Cod, MA: Cape Codders kicked off the first day of summer on June 21, 2009 with the Cape Cod Chamber's inaugural Cape Cod Quahog Day at the Quahog Republic Waterfront eatery in Bourne.
Highlighting the day of family fun was the Quahog Prognostication: The Secretary General of the Quahog Republic (who speaks the secret language of the bi-valve), consulted with the official Quahog, who has been in seclusion for the past year, while Master of Ceremonies and Channel 5 news anchor Steve Lacy and the crowd waited with anticipation to hear how many weeks of beach weather lie ahead. The little soothsayer brought good news, predicting 11 ½ weeks of sunshine! If he's right, he'll be kept in seclusion and be brought out again for next year's Quahog Day. But if he's wrong? He'll be eaten at the end of the summer.

Other highlights of the event included dancing and entertainment by the Red Hawk Singers of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe, as well as the crowning of the 2009 Ms. Quahog, Boss Hog and Mister/Miss Littleneck. Far from a beauty pageant, the contestants in these competitions had to compete in a variety of challenges such as shell tossing, shrimp eating, putting into a pail, digging for quahogs, watermelon eating and the limbo.
Partial proceeds raised at the event will benefit the National Marine Life Center in Buzzards Bay. Supporters included Green Shuttle of Cape Cod and Cape Cod Textile.
