Featured Stories & Articles from Cape Cod Travel Magazine: Pilgrim Monument and Provincetown Museum Commemorates the Monument’s 100th Anniversary
Pilgrim Monument and Provincetown Museum (PMPM) will be a hub of activity during the 2010 summer tourist season as it presents a series of special events and programming in honor of its 100th anniversary of the dedication of the Monument. Tourists, history buffs, art lovers, music lovers, families and kids, and those looking for the best 360-degree view of the Outer Cape, will all find something of interest at the PMPM this summer.
100th Anniversary
The anniversary will be celebrated on Thursday, August 5th with the day beginning with a parade down Commercial Street, followed by a public ceremony at the Pilgrim Monument at 1 p.m., ending with closing ceremonies and a laser light show in the evening, complete with of all the pomp and circumstance that such a monumental occasion deserves. Beginning June 20th, the PMPM will be selling Celebrate 100 commemorative “coins” that will provide admission to the Pilgrim Monument and Provincetown Museum afternoon speaking ceremony on August 5th, and also special discounts and offers from local merchants who are supporting the Centennial festivities.
New Exhibit
All summer long, the PMPM will show the new exhibit 100 Views / 100 Years featuring Provincetown’s icon interpreted through art,postcards and decorative objects created over the last hundred years.
Mayflower Room Renovation
The PMPM has re-opened its Mayflower Room after renovations including three new Pilgrim exhibits.
History Walking Tours
The popular history walking tours kickoff again in July and run through August, every Wednesday and Friday at 9:30 a.m. beginning July 7th.
More for History Buffs
Additional events will surely spark the interest of visitors looking for an inside view on the origins of the Pilgrims and their voyage to the New World. All events take place at 1 p.m. June 19, Paul Bumpus, Historian General of the General Society of Mayflower Descendants will give a talk: Mayflower Genealogy: Connecting the Generations. July 10, Mashpee Wampanoag Hartman Deetz will give a talk about sifting the truth between the romanticized myths of early Wampanoag and English relations: “Squanto and the myths of the Pilgrims.” July 24, an interpreter from Plimoth Plantation who portrays and actual resident of 1627 Plymouth will give a talk: Journey to New Plymouth.
Family Fun and Children’s Programs
Families can take advantage of the lovely grounds of the PMPM by packing a picnic lunch and taking a breather after climbing the Monument’s 116 steps and 60 ramps. Children’s programs such as learning about marine mammals, sharks and other ocean creatures are held throughout the summer. All programs begin at 11 a.m. July 12, Marine Mammals, July 26, Camouflaged Creatures and August 16, Fishy Prints.
Music Series
A return of the Monumental Music Series this coming season with concerts at 7 p.m. on July 27th and August 17 with Paul Bisaccia and John Thomas performing 1910-music (classical, ragtime and more) composed and premiered the year that the Pilgrim Monument was dedicated. August 31 will feature a concert by Jon Aterton and James Mack.
Author/Book signings
The PMPM is the place to be to meet local authors of books that relate to Provincetown and its history. The authors will talk about their books, followed by a book signing. Saturday, June 26 at 1 p.m., features Elizabeth Moisan who wrote Master of the Sweet Trade: A Story of the Pirate Samuel Bellamy, Mariah Hallet and the Wydah. Saturday, August 21 at 11 a.m. features Julia Whorf Kelly who wrote Feast of Famine: Growing Up Bohemian in Provincetown.
