FORGOTTEN PORT: Provincetown's Whaling Heritage

This new exhibition at the Provincetown Museum tells the story of the historical importance of the whaling industry to the town's development and follows the evolution of the town from hunting whales to saving whales. Also on display: The History, Restoration and Historic Journey of the Charles W. Morgan. Admission is $12 adults, $10 seniors, $4 children; children under the age of four enter free. PMPM provides ample parking in the center of Town; $12 parking fee includes one free adult admission to the Monument and Museum.

This year marks the return of Heritage’s permanent collection of antique and classic automobiles with a whole new look and interpretive theme, plus a carload of interactive fun! Discover how Heritage founder Josiah K. Lilly, III collected and restored American automobiles—and learn about the passion and desire that compel people to seek out and collect objects they love. Driven to Collect will feature the finest cars in the Heritage collection. It will also include displays of other collectibles from the Heritage vaults, such as banks, trains, and art.

David Rogers’ Big Bugs Exhibit

What happens when you recreate insects on a gargantuan scale using all natural materials? You have Big Bugs. Sculptor David Rogers creates insects such as 25-foot-long ants and dragonflies with 17-foot wingspans using combinations of whole trees, cut green saplings, dry branches, and other forest materials. The inherent uniqueness of these materials, their different shapes, colors and textures provide these sculptures with character, definition and a sense of motion.

Dozens of expertly crafted models varying from 12” to 48” long will be on display including Whaling ships, Grand Banks fishing schooners, Pilot schooners and very early tug boats to name but a few. These magnificent model ships are all expertly handcrafted by members of the USS Constitution Model Shipwright Guild many of whom are from New England.
