Small in scale and intimate in feeling, Pilgrim Hall Museum offers a chance to get up close and personal with the reality of past - inviting visitors to "Please Touch!" an authentic piece of Plymouth Rock. Less durable but equally authentic artifacts are displayed in more protective surroundings - the Brewster family chest that was brought to America on the Mayflower, the cradle of Peregrine White, William Bradford's great chair, the 1685 Bible translated by John Eliot into the Native Massachusett language, the only portrait of a Pilgrim (Edward Winslow) actually painted from life and the earliest sampler made in America, worked by teenage Loara Standish, daughter of Mayflower passenger Myles Standish, are among the treasures exhibited.  Also on display in our dramatic high-ceilinged Main Hall are world-famous history paintings that illuminate the continuing significance of the Pilgrim story throughout American history, including Henry Sargent's The Landing of the Pilgrims, William Formsby Halsall's The Mayflower on Her Arrival in Plymouth Harbor and Jennie A. Brownscombe's The First Thanksgiving Pilgrim Hall, built in 1824, is America's oldest continuously-operating museum. The Hall has recently finished a $3.9 million renovation and expansion project that has brought modern amenities to the historic Greek Revival granite structure. Visiting with children?Ask us about the "Treasure Hunt" (age-appropriate activity sheets for youngsters that help them to interact with the Museum at their own level and their own pace).
