Handkerchief Shoals Cape Cod Inn is a beautifully restored classic Cape Cod motel with the look and feel of a modern Cape Cod Inn.
It's just a short walk or ride (1/2 mile) to Red River Beach and several other beautiful Cape Cod beaches. The large grounds give a nice feeling of privacy in a very quiet tree filled area of Harwich and include a sparkling 9ft deep swimming pool. There is also a barbecue area and lawn games available to our guests.
We offer a variety of exceptionally clean and charming rooms. All bedrooms have been recently renovated and feature private baths, large flat screen TV, refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker and individually controlled heat and air conditioning. Complementary Continential Breakfast is available from Memorial Day to Labor day.

The name of our inn comes from the Handkerchief Shoals (sandbars which create dangerously shallow waters) off the shores of Monomoy Island. Here the historic Handkerchief Shoals Lightship was placed to guide the ships around these dangerous shoals until 1951. Lightships were deployed where lighthouses could not be built due to unsuitable conditions. Today an unlighted nun buoy (N’14’) bobs in the place once occupied by the lightship. There are still a few seamen alive today who used the lightship to navigate the waters of Nantucket Sound as well as a few brave men who served on the vessel.
Legend has it that the white caps turning over the shoals resembled the waving of handkerchiefs from the loved ones of sailors saying goodbye.
